Spain and dogs

I want to be the first in Spain to give the public the opportunity to know this magnificent breed of dog:   the Boerboel.

Spain has a bit of a bad reputation when it comes to dogs; one has to realize that only a short while ago Spain was a very poor country compared with the rest of Europe.  The people had a different standard of living, sometimes with little food, and for this reason, dogs did not form a part of a person´s life just for the sake of having one.  A dog was “just a dog”.  Yes, they liked to own hunting dogs because hunting was of way of getting food.

Many unjust things are said about the Spanish and their relationships with dogs.  It is true that after the hunting season closes and the dogs no longer have an immediate use, some people do horrible things to them, but these acts are heavily fined.  Little by little the mentality towards dogs is changing.  It is important to realize that not all the bad things that happen to dogs are at the hands of just the Spanish but also by other Europeans who live here, for example:  people get a puppy but when the summer holidays come they abandon them because they don´t want to or can´t take the dog with them.  Abandoned, they become victims and many end up in shelters.  However, today in Spain people are beginning to realize that a dog can be an agreeable companion.  Every day I see more and more Spanish people out walking with their dogs.  This is what I wanted to share!
